Of the same generation as other Socialist Realism painters such as Arkadi Soroka, Viktor Pirogov was also active in Vinnitsa, Ukraine. One of his most important shows was the All-Union Art Exhibition in 1949 alongside Nikolai Bazilev. Created by the USSR, the Union of Artists served the USSR agenda by evoking nationalistic pride. The Union itself functioned to improve artistic skill and excellence while financing creative endeavors like the All-Union Art Exhibition. Pirogov specialized in portraits and thematic pictures that propagated national pride.
